Christmas Crackers for Festive Beauty

It’s that time of year again, and it feels like it has come around super quick this year. And we thought it might be useful to offer you come beauty tips to make the most of this festive season.

Whether you are off to the Christmas party and want that extra special look, or just want some protective treatments to keep you skin nice and healthy throughout the bitter winter cold, we here at the Tanning and Beauty Clinic have plenty to offer you.

Let’s begin with the main premise of our name: Tanning.

As the nights get darker and the days get colder, sometimes having a nice summer glow can give you a real pick me up and let’s face it, can really make you feel awesome in the Christmas party dress! We offer both fake and natural tans. With our St Tropez booth, you can get a quick and flawless tan without catching the rays from as little as £10. Fake tans do need a little bit of TLC though so check out our ‘How to get a killer tan and keep it’ blog – trust me, fake tan isn’t always easy, even when someone else is doing it forward, so check out our simple steps for making sure you get the most out of your tan.

If, however, like me, you need a bit of Vitamin D to make you function throughout the winter months, to give your mood a bit of a twist and your skin a nice Mediterranean glow, or maybe you just want to have a few minutes’ respite from the cold.  Whatever your purpose, we have two upright tanning booths with 0.3 safety tubes to give you a responsible way to get a lasting tan. From 50p per minute and with courses available, you can get yourself a great summer glow for a low price.

So, for the more practical: Waxing.

If you are getting your heels on for the festive season, or perhaps you are lucky enough to be jetting off to warmer climates, getting a hot wax could be perfect for you. There are many benefits of waxing over shaving, for one, not having to spend what sometimes feels like hours in the shower trying to get into every nook and cranny possibly, only to find that you have missed a patch whilst applying your moisturiser!

To help you with this predicament, we offer high quality hypo allergenic waxing services; from full legs to lip and chin, we can wax anywhere you like, even the most intimate of areas. The benefits of this are reduced irritation and discomfort post treatment which will leave your skin super soft and smooth. Because the wax can work to get a better grip of the hair, it is great for removing short hairs and any ingrown hair, ensuring that you get a great, long lasting finish.

Party Prep – Nails, Eyelashes and More

If, like me, you like to add a bit of something extra to your beauty routine at this time of year, we have lots of beauty treatments to suit you. Whether you like to have a natural enhancement to your already gorgeous features, or you want to go for a dramatic party girl look, we have something for you.

If you want that extra confidence boost, with naturally enhanced eyes the appear more youthful and bright, eyelash extension treatments may be the perfect pre-party prep for you. For a longer lasting look, express party lashes can give you 2-3 weeks of perfect long lashes. If, you want something on the more temporary side, party lashes that last 2-3 days might be preferential, to give your eyes a luscious boost for that festive party.

Wow brows to compliment your lashes may also be something of interest. At this time of year, I find it particularly difficult to find the energy to maintain perfect eyelashes – I’d rather spend an extra fifteen minutes in bed of a morning! With services, such as eyebrow shaping, lifts and tints, you can get a perfect eyebrow game that will last you right through the festive season.

And for those who like to complement their look with the perfect nails – I for one could no longer imagine life without gel nails, our nail experts can help you get flawless nails that shine and last for up to three weeks. Not only this, but regular nail treatments can help your nails become healthier which promotes growth. Particularly during the cold winter weather, looking after your nails can really enhance your look. From manicures, to Gelish to acrylics, we have something to suit your requirements and our friendly staff would be more than happy to give you advice on what might be right for you. We also have a great range of festive colours to compliment any festive outfit!

Post-Christmas TLC

And so, for dealing with the come down of the party season. The exhausted skin from late nights and falling asleep without removing make up, as well as possibly a little too much prosecco might be desperate for some TLC come 2nd January.

Facials are a great way to help overcome the post-Christmas blues, with a relaxing treatment that can help to detox your skin, deep clean those pores and help your skin feel incredible again. It is also a great way of prepping the skin to help deal with the cold weather and really compliments your regular skin care routine. Not only that but our specially formulated treatments will leave you feeling pampered and relaxed – just what the doctor ordered after a long month of shopping in the freezing cold and overindulging in all kinds of senses! Yes, definitely recommended as a way to recover.

And, if you really overdid it over Christmas, a massage might be the perfect way to unwind. Research has shown that massages can help you to sleep better, destress, deal with any muscular complaints and can even go as far as to relieve anxiety, headaches and any other strain related complaints. Of course, it is also just an amazing way to spend an hour to help you relax and rejuvenate. There are plenty of different styles of massage to choose from too and our staff can help you decide which would be the best for you. This would certainly be my choice for a post-Christmas treatment to help you fight the January blues!

Looking for a thoughtful Christmas gift?

Of course, if none of this is your cup of tea, well a) well done for making it to the end of this blog J and b) you might now someone who would love one, several or all of these treatments. In that case, this could give you the perfect Christmas gift. Pop in to the salon for a chat with one of our friendly consultants and we can help you find that perfect gift for one of your loved ones.

To facial or not to facial

So we all know that skin care routines are important, right? Comment below if you are one of those who know it, but don’t follow a regular one….

Ok, so I’m not going to claim to have a strict face care routine that I NEVER deviate from. Once I’ve had three glasses of vino, the likelihood is I’m waking up with a face covered in mascara and lipstick.

However, especially as I creep closer toward middle-age, I am quite understanding of the importance of a good skin care routine, and my bathroom cupboard is full of deep cleaning face masks, peels, exfoliators etc. So every time I do wake up looking like the joker, I ensure that I give myself a thorough, deep cleaning facial to make up for my sins. And this is still, of course, very important.

However, even for those of us who do have a strict skin care regime, it is still important to give you’re face a professional look in once in a while. Regardless of whether you have the most perfect complexion or not, treating your skin to some professional pampering can have huge benefits.

So why should you give your skin such TLC? Well, your skin is your body’s largest organ and it is what protects you from the rest of the outside world including all of the toxins, weather battering’s and anything else your general surroundings throw at you. Regardless of how old you are, it is important to consider that healthier skin will help you fight the signs of ageing, will heal much faster and will help you to stave off disease and infection. So I’m sure you will agree that it is really important to take care of it!

Getting a facial will provide your skin with much bigger benefits than following your usual face care routine (which is still hugely important by the way, so no slacking off!). One of the first things you will find is that getting a professional to take a look at your skin will help you to understand how and why it behaves like it does. Now only will this help your beautician identify the best course of treatment at the time, but it will also help you to ensure that your regular routine is one which is the best for the type of skin you have.

Professional treatments will also help to cleanse your pores in a way that you never would be able to at home, regardless of all the expensive wonder treatments you have invested in.

There are also some things that you should never try out at home. Take the last facial I went for, for example. I was treated to a light steam with aromatherapy fragrance. This made my skin feel absolutely incredible and was so relaxing, I nearly fell asleep. This is absolutely not something you should DIY, likelihood is, you will come out in blisters, or worse!

Above all though, having a facial is so relaxing. It’s not just a bit of time for some skin pampering, it is also a good time so let your brain switch off, disengage from the world, and finally relax! As stress is one of the key factors leading to bad skin, this is an essential part of the experience.

But most of all, regardless of you skin type, facials will have you leaving with a new found confidence. I don’t particularly have massive problem skin, but after having a facial, my skin feels so smooth, healthy and glowing and I walk with a new found spring in my step.

Facials don’t have to be a huge drain on your bank balance either. You don’t need to go for a facial a week to feel the benefit. Once a month, or even every couple of months will help to give your skin the treatment that it needs, and will ensure that you get all the good advice from your beautician about your skin care routine to ensure you have the healthiest skin possible.

So yes, I am definitely one to facial, and I would certainly recommend that you give it a go. Top tip though, remember that facials are hugely relaxing, and that you will likely have been lying down for 30 mins or more. Make sure you get up slowly once its done, or you will fall over…not that I’m speaking from experience…

How to get a killer spray tan – and keep it!

So, you are about to go out to ‘that’ party you have been waiting for for months, in ‘that’ killer dress with ‘those’ killer heels. You know you are going to look fab, but a bit of a spray tan might just give you that extra boost to help you look and feel amazing – everyone loves having a tan, right?

So you’ve paid to have your tan done, you look like you’ve just come back from the Costa-del-amazing – and what’s a few quid to have that feeling of luscious bronze legs? Well it’s actually not that expensive at all – but why paid more for less? Wait! Don’t switch off yet, this isn’t a sales pitch ‘we are cheaper than our competitors’ blah, blah, blah. There is nothing worse than a blog that may as well be coming to you from someone who couldn’t care less about helping you feel great, and only really cares about the lining of your purse.

No, this blog is about helping you make the most of your investment in your super hot tan, how to make it last longer and look better.

So the reason for this being our first blog is two-fold. Firstly, we are the Tanning and Beauty clinic, so what better place to start, but secondly, because I wanted to share my first tanning experience with you, to help you NOT make the same mistakes I did.

Now I am somewhat of a tanning addict, having been addicted to sunbeds for years. I just love the feeling of having a great tan, especially in the summer. I’d avoided spray tans because I was convinced that I would come out looking like a patchy pumpkin to be perfectly honest. But now, I am a total convert. You can have what ever type of tan you want – hey, bright orange might be your thing and I’m not one to judge. But you can also have a really natural look just to give you a bit of a glow. The only thing to bear in mind is that your tan will only give as good as it gets, and if you don’t look after it, it won’t stick around.

So, with that in mind, here are some of my tips for getting a great tan and keeping it (ok, not like forever, but for long enough to make it worth spending your pocket money on):

  1. Preparation is key:

There are two parts to this tip:

Firstly, If you need to wax/shave, do it the day before. Doing it after you have had your tan will simply bring your tan off, probably unevenly.

Secondly, exfoliate. This is so important. Again, I didn’t listen and I didn’t do it. But everything makes your skin dry…the weather, the products you use air pollution etc. You need to make your skin as even as possible, without exfoliating, your tan is likely to flake off as your skin naturally does on a daily basis. So make sure you make it as smooth as possible the night before your appointment.

  1. On the Day

DO NOT wear deodorant! Everyone will tell you this, and, like me, you will probably ignore them. I mean what’s the worst that could happen, right? Well mine went green. That’s right, I had green underarms for 4 DAYS! And when the green faded it just went white. So don’t do it. Just get your tan done in the morning on your day off. Or, if like me, you don’t really care, because your tan is more important, just don’t wear any that day at work. Your friends will understand…or they will just avoid you!

Also, remember to bring the right type of clothes with you. You will be given time in the tanning booth for your tan to dry, but these tans develop over night. If you wear tight clothes after, your tan will rub off. Make sure you bring baggy clothes and flip flops. OK, you won’t look incredible when you leave your appointment but trust me, it will be so worth it!

Be prepared that you are going to have to take your make up off. Please refer to my deodorant point above! If you are like me and can’t even as much as put the rubbish in the outdoor bin without my slap on, I realise that this might not be the easiest of things to do – no make up for 8. Whole. Hours!? And feel for me, ok? I have to get a train home and then walk 20 minutes at the other side! But trust me, your face will already look incredible from your tan, and the likelihood is, no one will even notice!

Don’t panic that your tan is uneven and wash it all off immediately. The tan is likely to look dirty and uneven until it has had a chance to develop and you wash off the excess in the morning. Note, in the morning. Avoid water at all costs for at least 8 hours!

  1. After care

Don’t shower for at least 8 hours. I know I just said this above, but it’s super important, so I’m saying it again! The tan will wash off. Now, even after 8 hours, the tan will actually wash off, so don’t be alarmed when the water turns brown, its perfectly natural and you aren’t going to go back to your natural colour. However, the way you shower is important for keeping that tan looking great. So here are a couple of tips:

  • It is always best to use lukewarm water rather than really hot water
  • Avoid using moisturising shower gels and stick to natural products if you can

Moisturising is so important! Again, this is to ensure that your skin doesn’t flake and peel your tan off. However, avoid oil based moisturisers, your tan will literally fall right off!

Be careful about exercising and avoid chlorine at all costs. Sweating and chlorine are really bad for the tan and will strip it off much quicker. I appreciate that if you are having a tan for your holiday that avoiding chlorine might be unlikely, but just be warned, and try not to spend ALL day lounging in the pool.

Exfoliation after having the tan done is ok, and I would actually recommend it to make sure that your skin stays smooth and your tan stays even. Make sure you moisturise lightly though to avoid bringing the tan off.

So there you have it, you’re all set. Don’t worry, it isn’t all as complicated as it seems and most of it is common sense to be fair (so you wouldn’t think, I pretty much managed to do the opposite to all of these on my first go). My advice would be to have a practice run with your tan anyway, especially if you haven’t had one before. This will give you the chance to test how your skin responds to the tan and practice look after it. Tans aren’t for everyone and it is so important that you try it out before your big night out/big day/big holiday so you can be sure it is what you want. And if…IF anything goes wrong…lemon juice and a loofer will get it right off.
